Common Hand Tools and their Care
Overview
Common hand tools are the foundation of every electrician's work. In ITI Electrician Semester 1, students learn to identify, use, and maintain tools like screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, chisels, files, and hacksaws. Proper care and correct usage prevent accidents and extend tool life. NCVT exam papers regularly test tool identification, correct usage, material composition, and safety precautions. Understanding these basics is essential for both theory papers and practical assessments.

Screwdrivers — Types, Parts & Care
A screwdriver consists of a handle, shank (blade), and tip. The tip must exactly fit the screw slot to avoid slipping and damaging the screw head. Types: (1) Flat/slotted — most common, (2) Phillips/cross-head — self-centering, (3) Pozidriv — improved Phillips. The blade is made of high-carbon steel or chrome-vanadium steel. Care: Never use a screwdriver as a chisel or lever. Keep the tip properly ground. Insulated screwdrivers must be used on live circuits. Exam tip: The shank length is measured from handle to tip, NOT including the handle.
Pliers — Types and Uses in Electrical Work
Pliers are gripping and cutting tools. Important types for electricians: (1) Combination/Lineman's Pliers — grip, cut, and twist wires; (2) Long-nose (Needle-nose) Pliers — work in confined spaces, form loops in wire; (3) Side-cutting Pliers — cut wires flush; (4) Diagonal Cutting Pliers (Dikes) — cut wires close to terminals; (5) Slip-joint Pliers — adjustable jaw opening. Handles are insulated with PVC or rubber rated 1000V. Care: Oil the joint regularly, never use pliers on nuts/bolts (use a spanner instead), and never hammer pliers.
Hammers, Chisels and Files
Ball-peen Hammer: Head made of forged/cast steel, handle of hickory wood or fiberglass. Sizes: 100g, 200g, 300g, 500g. The flat face strikes chisels; the ball peen is used for riveting. Cold Chisel: Made of high-carbon steel, hardened and tempered at the cutting edge. Used to cut metal, chip concrete. Files: Classified by length (100–350 mm), shape, and cut grade — Bastard (rough), Second cut (medium), Smooth (fine). A file should never be used without a handle — the tang can pierce the palm. Always use a file card to clean clogged teeth.
Hacksaw and Measuring/Marking Tools
Hacksaw Frame: Adjustable (250–300 mm) or fixed. Blade: High-speed steel (HSS) or bi-metal. Teeth point forward (away from handle) so cutting happens on the forward stroke. TPI selection: 14–18 TPI for aluminium/copper; 24–32 TPI for conduit/thin sheet metal. Apply cutting fluid (oil) on hard metals. Steel Rule: Graduated in mm and inches, used for measuring. Try Square: Checks 90° angles. Scriber: Marks lines on metal surfaces — tip is hardened steel. Punch: Centre punch marks drilling centres; dot punch marks layout lines. Exam tip: Hacksaw cuts on the PUSH (forward) stroke, not the pull stroke.
Topics & Sub-topics
Har topic ke saath sub-topics aur example — chapter ka complete coverage.
01Common Hand Tools
- Screwdrivers (flat, Phillips, insulated)
- Pliers — lineamn, nose, side-cutting
- Wire stripper, crimping tool
Lineamn pliers se wire twist aur cutting dono hote hain — 1000 V rated insulation honi chahiye.
02Striking and Cutting Tools
- Ball-peen hammer, mallet
- Cold chisel, punch
- Hacksaw with fine blade for conduit
Conduit pipe katne ke liye fine-teeth hacksaw blade use hoti hai — rough cut ke liye nahi.
03Measuring Tools on Site
- Steel rule, measuring tape
- Spirit level for DB fixing
- Try square for board work
DB (distribution board) Latki nahi — spirit level se level par fix hota hai.
04Care and Maintenance of Tools
- Insulation check before use
- Sharpen chisels, oil tools
- Proper toolbox storage
Tool ka insulation crack ho to tool dobara use na karo — 500 V megger se test karo.
Key Concepts
Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.
- 01Screwdrivers are classified by tip type: Flat (slotted), Phillips (cross), and Pozidriv — blade material is high-carbon steel or chrome-vanadium steel.
- 02Combination Pliers (Lineman's Pliers) can grip, cut, and bend wire — insulated handles rated up to 1000V for electricians.
- 03Ball-peen hammer head is made of forged steel; the flat face is used for striking chisels, the ball end for riveting.
- 04Files are classified by cut (single, double, bastard, second, smooth) and shape (flat, round, half-round, triangular, square).
- 05Hacksaw blade teeth per inch (TPI): 14–18 TPI for soft metals, 24–32 TPI for hard/thin metals — always fit blade with teeth pointing forward.
Questions & Solutions
Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.
What is the correct direction of hacksaw blade teeth and why?
Name five types of files used in an electrician's workshop and state their classification by cut grade.
What material is used for a cold chisel and why must it be hardened only at the cutting edge?
State three safety precautions while using a screwdriver on electrical circuits.
What is TPI in a hacksaw blade? Which TPI is suitable for cutting electrical conduit (thin-walled steel tube)?
Common hand tools — screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, chisels, files, and hacksaws — are essential for ITI Electrician work. Each tool has a specific material, size, and application. Proper care (cleaning, oiling, correct storage) and safe usage (insulated handles, correct TPI, proper grip) prevent accidents and tool damage. NCVT papers frequently test tool identification, blade TPI, handle insulation ratings, and safety rules.
