DC Machines: Generators and Motors
Overview
DC Machines convert electrical energy to mechanical energy (motors) or mechanical energy to electrical energy (generators). Both use the same construction — a stator (field system) and rotor (armature). Key principles: Faraday's Law for generators, Fleming's Left-Hand Rule for motors, and Fleming's Right-Hand Rule for generators. This chapter is heavily tested in NCVT ITI Electrician Semester 3 papers through numerical problems, rule identification, and classification of machines.

Construction of DC Machine
A DC machine has six main parts: (1) Yoke — outer frame, provides mechanical support and magnetic path; (2) Pole core and pole shoes — concentrate magnetic flux; (3) Field winding — creates magnetic field; (4) Armature core — laminated silicon steel to reduce eddy current losses; (5) Armature winding — conductors where EMF is induced; (6) Commutator and brushes — convert AC generated in armature to DC at output terminals. Lap winding: A = P (parallel paths equal poles). Wave winding: A = 2 always.
DC Generator — Working and EMF Equation
A DC generator works on Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction — when conductors rotate in a magnetic field, EMF is induced. The EMF equation is: E = (PΦNZ)/(60A). Here P = number of poles, Φ = flux per pole (Weber), N = speed in RPM, Z = total armature conductors, A = parallel paths. For lap winding A=P; for wave winding A=2. Terminal voltage: V = E − IaRa (for generator). Critical resistance is the maximum field resistance at which a shunt generator can self-excite and build up voltage.
Types of DC Motors and Their Characteristics
DC motors are classified by field winding connection: (1) Series Motor — field in series with armature; high starting torque; used in cranes, traction, hoists; NEVER run on no-load (speed becomes dangerously high). (2) Shunt Motor — field in parallel with supply; nearly constant speed; used in lathes, fans, machine tools. (3) Compound Motor — combination of series and shunt; used in elevators, presses. Torque equation: T = (PΦZIa)/(2πA) N·m. Speed regulation = (No-load speed − Full-load speed)/Full-load speed × 100%.
Losses, Efficiency and Starters
DC machine losses: (1) Copper losses — I²R losses in armature and field windings; (2) Iron/Core losses — hysteresis loss (∝ f) and eddy current loss (∝ f²); (3) Mechanical losses — friction and windage. Efficiency η = Output/(Output + Losses) × 100%. Maximum efficiency occurs when variable losses (copper) = constant losses (iron + mechanical). A DC motor starter is used to limit high starting current (since back EMF = 0 at start). Types: 3-point starter (used with shunt/compound motors), 4-point starter (used when field weakening speed control is needed).

Key Concepts
Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.
- 01Fleming's Right-Hand Rule → Generator action (thumb=motion, index=field, middle=EMF induced)
- 02Fleming's Left-Hand Rule → Motor action (thumb=force/motion, index=field, middle=current)
- 03EMF equation of DC Generator: E = (PΦNZ)/(60A), where P=poles, Φ=flux, N=RPM, Z=conductors, A=parallel paths
- 04Back EMF in DC Motor: Eb = V − IaRa; Motor efficiency depends on back EMF being close to supply voltage
- 05Types of DC generators: Separately Excited, Self-Excited (Series, Shunt, Compound — cumulative & differential)
Questions & Solutions
Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.
State the EMF equation of a DC generator and explain each term.
Why should a DC series motor never be started on no-load?
Differentiate between lap winding and wave winding in DC machines.
What is back EMF in a DC motor? Write its significance.
A 4-pole DC generator has lap winding with 400 conductors. Flux per pole is 0.02 Wb and speed is 1500 RPM. Calculate the generated EMF.
DC generators use Fleming's Right-Hand Rule; DC motors use Fleming's Left-Hand Rule. EMF equation E=PΦNZ/60A is the most tested formula. Series motors give high starting torque but must never run on no-load. Shunt motors give constant speed. Starters limit starting current. Maximum efficiency occurs when copper losses equal iron losses. Lap winding gives A=P; wave winding gives A=2.
