Alternators and Power Generation
Overview
An alternator (synchronous generator) converts mechanical energy into alternating electrical energy using electromagnetic induction. It is the primary source of AC power in power stations, ships, and standby systems. Key topics for ITI Electrician Semester 4 include construction, working principle, EMF equation, types, voltage regulation, parallel operation, and cooling methods. Understanding these concepts is essential for both theory papers and practical assessments in NCVT examinations.

Construction and Types of Alternators
An alternator has two main parts: the stator (armature) and the rotor (field system). In the rotating field type, the armature winding is on the stator and the field winding is on the rotor. DC excitation is supplied to the rotor through slip rings. Two rotor types exist: (1) Salient pole rotor — used for low-speed, hydro turbines (below 1500 RPM), has projecting poles; (2) Cylindrical (smooth) rotor — used for high-speed steam turbines (1500 or 3000 RPM), gives uniform air gap. Rotating field type is preferred because high-voltage AC is taken from stationary terminals, avoiding insulation problems on slip rings.
Working Principle and EMF Equation
An alternator works on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. When the rotor field rotates, it cuts the stator conductors, inducing EMF. The RMS value of induced EMF per phase is given by: Eph = 4.44 × Kc × Kd × f × Φ × Tph. Here, Kc (pitch/coil span factor) accounts for short-pitched coils, Kd (distribution factor) accounts for distributed winding, f is frequency (50 Hz in India), Φ is flux per pole in Webers, and Tph is turns per phase. For a full-pitched, concentrated winding, Kc = Kd = 1, giving Eph = 4.44 × f × Φ × Tph.
Voltage Regulation and Parallel Operation
Voltage Regulation (VR) indicates how much the terminal voltage changes from no-load to full-load: VR% = (E0 – V)/V × 100. A lower VR% means better performance. For resistive and inductive loads, VR is positive; for capacitive loads, VR can be negative. Parallel operation of alternators is done to meet increased load demand and for maintenance. Conditions for parallel operation (synchronizing): (1) Same terminal voltage, (2) Same frequency, (3) Same phase sequence, (4) Same waveform. The process of connecting an incoming alternator in parallel with the bus bar is called synchronizing, checked using a synchroscope or three-lamp method.
Cooling, Ratings, and Applications
Alternators are rated in kVA (not kW) because the manufacturer cannot determine the power factor of the connected load. Large alternators use hydrogen gas cooling because hydrogen has 14 times higher thermal conductivity than air, reducing windage losses and fire risk. Small alternators use air cooling. Power factor of an alternator is determined by the external load. Applications include thermal power plants (steam turbine-driven, 3000 RPM), hydro power plants (water turbine-driven, low speed), diesel generators (standby power), and ship alternators. In India, standard frequency is 50 Hz and standard generation voltage is 11 kV, stepped up for transmission.

Key Concepts
Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.
- 01EMF equation of alternator: E = 4.44 × Kc × Kd × f × Φ × T (where Kc = coil span factor, Kd = distribution factor)
- 02Synchronous speed formula: Ns = 120f/P (f = frequency in Hz, P = number of poles)
- 03Voltage Regulation = (E0 – V)/V × 100% (E0 = no-load EMF, V = full-load terminal voltage)
- 04Alternators are classified as rotating armature type and rotating field type; rotating field type is universally preferred for high-voltage generation
- 05Pitch factor (Kc) is always less than 1 for short-pitched coils; distribution factor (Kd) is always less than 1 for distributed windings
