Rise of Magadha and Its Dynasties

Magadha, located in modern south Bihar, rose to prominence due to its fertile land, iron ore resources, strategic rivers (Ganga, Son), and strong rulers. The Haryanka dynasty began with Bimbisara (c. 544–492 BCE), who expanded Magadha through diplomacy and conquest. His son Ajatashatru (492–460 BCE) built Rajgir's fortifications and fought wars with Vaishali and Kosala. The Shishunaga dynasty followed, then the Nanda dynasty (founded by Mahapadma Nanda), known for its vast treasury. Finally, Chandragupta Maurya overthrew the Nandas with Chanakya's strategy, establishing the Maurya Empire — India's first large centralised empire.

Maurya Empire and Ashoka's Legacy

Chandragupta Maurya (321–297 BCE) unified most of the Indian subcontinent. His grandson Ashoka (268–232 BCE) is the most celebrated Maurya ruler. After the Kalinga War (261 BCE), Ashoka embraced Buddhism and propagated Dhamma. He erected pillars and rock edicts across the subcontinent — the Lion Capital at Sarnath is India's national emblem. Pataliputra (Patna) served as the imperial capital. Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador, visited Chandragupta's court and wrote Indica. The Arthashastra by Kautilya (Chanakya) is a key text on statecraft from this era, relevant for both UPSC and BPSC.

Nalanda University: Centre of Global Learning

Nalanda, located in modern Nalanda district of Bihar, was the world's first residential international university. Founded by Kumaragupta I (Gupta period, c. 415–455 CE), it flourished under later Gupta and Pala rulers. At its peak, it housed over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers. Chinese pilgrims Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang, 7th century CE) and Yijing (I-Tsing) studied and documented Nalanda. It specialised in Buddhist philosophy, logic, grammar, and medicine. Bakhtiyar Khilji destroyed it in 1193 CE, burning its massive library (Dharmaganja). UNESCO declared Nalanda a World Heritage Site in 2016.

Vikramshila University and the Pala Dynasty

Vikramshila University was founded by Pala king Dharmapala (c. 783–820 CE) at Antichak village, Bhagalpur district, Bihar. It was a premier centre for Vajrayana Buddhism and Tantric studies. The university had six colleges and a central temple. Atisha Dipankara, the famous Buddhist scholar who later spread Buddhism in Tibet, was a prominent teacher at Vikramshila. Like Nalanda, Vikramshila was also destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji around 1203 CE. The Pala dynasty, which patronised both universities, ruled Bihar and Bengal from the 8th to 12th centuries CE.
