1857 Revolt in Bihar – Kunwar Singh

The 1857 revolt in Bihar was led by Veer Kunwar Singh, a zamindar from Jagdispur in present-day Bhojpur district. Despite being around 80 years old, he fought brilliantly against British forces. He captured Arrah (district headquarters) briefly in 1857. Other notable leaders included his brother Amar Singh and Pir Ali Khan of Patna. Pir Ali Khan, a book-seller, organised a revolutionary cell in Patna and was hanged by the British. The Wahabi Movement, centred in Patna, also contributed to anti-British sentiment in Bihar during this period.

Champaran Satyagraha (1917) – Gandhi's First in India

Champaran Satyagraha (1917) was Mahatma Gandhi's first Satyagraha on Indian soil, making it a landmark event. European planters forced indigo farmers to cultivate indigo on 3/20th of their land under the oppressive tinkathia system. Gandhi arrived in Champaran at the invitation of Rajkumar Shukla, a local peasant leader. The British government appointed the Champaran Agrarian Committee, and Gandhi was made a member. The result was the Champaran Agrarian Act (1918), which abolished the tinkathia system. Rajendra Prasad, Mazhar-ul-Haq, and J.B. Kripalani assisted Gandhi during this movement.

Non-Cooperation & Civil Disobedience in Bihar

Bihar actively participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–22). Rajendra Prasad gave up his legal practice and joined the movement. The Bihar Student Conference, founded in 1906, mobilised youth. During the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930–34), Biharis participated in salt satyagraha and boycott of foreign goods. The Patna Session of the Indian National Congress (1912) was significant for Bihar. After the Bihar earthquake of 1934, Gandhi visited and used it to promote constructive work. Bihar's Congress leaders consistently formed a strong bloc within the national movement.

Quit India Movement (1942) & JP's Role

Bihar was one of the most active states during the Quit India Movement (1942). Jayaprakash Narayan dramatically escaped from Hazaribagh Central Jail on November 9, 1942, along with five others, and continued underground resistance. He formed the Azad Dasta (freedom squads) to carry out guerrilla activities. Jagjivan Ram, born in Chandwa (Bhojpur), Bihar, was another key national leader. The Tamluk and Satara parallel governments inspired similar attempts in Bihar. Yogendra Shukla and Suraj Narayan Singh were important Bihar leaders arrested during this movement. Patna witnessed massive student protests on August 11, 1942, where seven students were shot dead near the Secretariat.
