CHAPTER 04 Typed notes Q&A included

Maps

Overview

A globe is very large and does not show the entire Earth clearly. That is why we draw a part of the Earth on paper — this is called a map. To show the exact location of every place on a map, we need certain things: symbols, direction, scale, and colours.

What is a map and how many types are there

A map is a drawing of the Earth's surface (or any part of it) on a flat piece of paper. There are three main types: (1) Physical map — shows natural features: mountains, plains, rivers, oceans, forests. (2) Political map — shows borders of countries, states, and cities: for example, a map of India showing all its states. (3) Thematic map — focuses on one specific topic: a rainfall map, a road map, a population map. Questions on map types are very common in exams.

Components of a map

Every map has five essential elements: (1) Title — tells us what the map is about; (2) Direction — tells us which side is which. The four cardinal directions are: North (top), South (bottom), East (right), West (left); the corners between them — NE, SE, SW, NW — are called intermediate directions. (3) Scale — tells us how many times smaller the map is compared to the actual ground; (4) Symbols — the same signs used everywhere (railway, river, temple, bridge); (5) Colours — green for plains, brown for mountains, blue for water.

Calculating distance using scale

Scale tells us the relationship between the distance on the map and the actual distance on the ground. Example: if the map says '1 cm = 10 km', and two cities are 3 cm apart on the map — then the actual distance = 3 × 10 = 30 km. When a large area is shown on a small map (like India's map within a map of Asia) — it is called a small scale map. When a small area is shown in great detail on a large map (like a city map) — it is called a large scale map.

Sketch and Plan

A sketch is a rough drawing of a place made by hand — for example, showing the route from your home to school — it does not have a scale, but it helps you understand the way. A plan is a very detailed drawing of a small area — like the layout of a house or the arrangement of a room — in which everything is shown in exactly the right proportion. The scale of a plan is very large because a small area is drawn in a much bigger size.

Key Concepts

Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.

  • 01Map: Drawing a part of the Earth (or the whole Earth) on paper at a smaller scale. Types: physical maps (mountains, rivers), political maps (countries, states), thematic maps (rainfall, roads, population).
  • 02Direction: On maps, the top is North, the bottom is South, the left is West, and the right is East. The four main directions are: North, South, East, West — these are called cardinal points.
  • 03Scale: It tells us how many times smaller the map is compared to the actual ground — for example, 1 cm = 10 km. Using the scale, we can calculate the actual distance.
  • 04Symbols and colours: The same symbols are used everywhere (railway line, temple, river) — this allows a person of any language to read the map. Colours: green — plains, brown — mountains, blue — water.
  • 05Sketch vs Plan: A sketch is a rough drawing of a place made by hand (without a scale); a plan is a very large-scale drawing of a small area (like the layout of a house), made in accurate proportion.

Summary

A map is a drawing of the Earth on paper, and it is made up of 5 elements: title, direction (N-S-E-W), scale, symbols, and colours. Physical maps show natural features, political maps show countries and states, and thematic maps focus on one specific topic. Actual distances are measured using the scale. A plan is a drawing of a small area, while a sketch is a drawing without a scale.
