CHAPTER 10 Typed notes Q&A included

New Empires and Kingdoms

Overview

After the Maurya Empire ended, many new kingdoms and empires rose in India. The Gupta Empire became one of the most powerful, ruling from around 320 CE to 550 CE. This period is often called a golden age because art, literature, science, and mathematics flourished. Kings used titles, performed yajnas, and gave land grants to show their power. We also learn about the Pallavas and Chalukyas who ruled in South India.

The Gupta Empire and Its Great Kings

The Gupta Empire began around 320 CE when Chandragupta I took the title 'Maharajadhiraja' meaning king of kings. His son Samudragupta expanded the empire greatly by conquering many kingdoms. We know about his conquests from the Allahabad Pillar Inscription written by his poet Harishena. Samudragupta was also a skilled veena player and poet. His son Chandragupta II defeated the Shakas and took the title 'Vikramaditya'. The Guptas collected taxes, maintained armies, and gave land grants called 'agrahara' to Brahmanas and officials.

Prashastis and Land Grants as Historical Sources

Prashastis are inscriptions written in praise of kings to show how great and powerful they were. The Allahabad Pillar Prashasti praises Samudragupta as a great warrior, poet, and musician. Kings also issued copper plate inscriptions recording land grants given to Brahmanas, temples, or officials. These land grants are important historical sources because they tell us about the economy, society, and administration of the time. Sometimes the people who received land also got the right to collect taxes from the villages given to them, which shows how power was shared.

The Golden Age: Art, Science, and Literature

The Gupta period is famous for great achievements. The poet Kalidasa wrote beautiful plays and poems like Abhijnanasakuntalam and Meghadutam in Sanskrit. The mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata wrote the Aryabhatiyam, calculated the value of pi, and explained that the Earth rotates on its axis. Doctors like Sushruta performed surgeries. Iron pillars like the one in Delhi show advanced metallurgy. Beautiful cave paintings at Ajanta and sculptures in temples were also made during this period. This flowering of culture, science, and art is why historians call it a Golden Age.

The Pallavas and Chalukyas of South India

While the Guptas ruled in the north, powerful kingdoms rose in South India. The Pallavas ruled from their capital Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu from around the 6th to 9th centuries CE. They built beautiful stone temples like the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram. The Chalukyas ruled from Aihole and Vatapi (modern Karnataka) from around the 6th to 8th centuries CE. Their king Pulakesi II even defeated Harshavardhana of Kanauj. Both kingdoms fought each other often. The Aihole inscription written by the poet Ravikirti praises Pulakesi II and is an important historical source.
