Buildings, Paintings and Books
Overview
This chapter explores the remarkable achievements of ancient India in architecture, art, and literature. From the construction of magnificent stupas and temples to the creation of beautiful paintings in caves, and the writing of important texts like the Puranas, Mahabharata, and Ramayana, ancient Indians showed great skill and creativity. Stupas and Their Construction
The word 'stupa' means a mound. Stupas were built to house the relics of the Buddha, such as his bodily remains or objects he used. They were considered sacred by Buddhists. A simple stupa was a semi-circular mound of earth, later covered with bricks or stone. Around the stupa was a railing called a vedika, and an entrance gateway called a torana. The Great Stupa at Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh is one of the finest examples. It was built by Emperor Ashoka and later enlarged. The carvings on the toranas show scenes from the life of the Buddha and Jataka tales.
Temples, Iron Pillar and Metalwork
About 1500 years ago, magnificent temples began to be built in India. The most important part of a temple was the room called the garbhagriha, where the image of the main deity was placed. Above the garbhagriha was a tower called the shikhara. Temples also had a mandapa, a hall where worshippers could gather. The iron pillar near the Qutub Minar in Delhi is a wonderful example of ancient Indian metalwork. It is about 7.2 metres tall and was made around 1500 years ago. Remarkably, it has not rusted even after so many centuries, showing the extraordinary skill of ancient Indian craftspeople.
Paintings and the Ajanta Caves
The Ajanta caves in Maharashtra are famous for their stunning paintings. These caves were carved out of rock and used by Buddhist monks. The paintings inside show scenes from the life of the Buddha and stories from the Jataka tales. Artists used natural colours made from plants and minerals. The paintings are so detailed that they show the clothing, jewellery, and expressions of people from that time. These paintings were created over many centuries and are considered masterpieces of ancient Indian art. They give us a vivid picture of life, nature, and culture in ancient India.
Books, Literature and Science
Ancient India produced many important texts. The Puranas contain stories about gods, goddesses, kings, and heroes. They were composed in simple Sanskrit so that everyone, including women and shudras, could listen to them. The Mahabharata and Ramayana are two great epics. The Mahabharata, attributed to Vyasa, tells the story of the Pandavas and Kauravas. The Ramayana, attributed to Valmiki, tells the story of Rama. Aryabhata was a great mathematician and astronomer who wrote the Aryabhatiyam around 1500 years ago. He explained that the Earth rotates on its axis, calculated the value of pi, and worked out the length of a solar year very accurately.
