Food: Where Does it Come From?
Overview
Every region has its own food — roti, rice, dosa, idli. But where does all this come from? In this chapter, we will trace the journey of food: from the farmer's field to our plate, from plants and animals to our meals, and we will also learn what different animals eat.
Typed Notes
Where does food come from
Every food item has a source — either a plant or an animal. Rice and wheat come from fields (plants), milk comes from cows and buffaloes, eggs come from hens, and honey comes from bees. Preparing food does not require just one thing — it needs several ingredients. Ingredients for roti: flour (from wheat), water, salt, and a little oil. Every ingredient also comes from some source — fields, rivers, or the sea.
Parts of plants — all forms of food
Every part of a plant gives us some form of food: Root — carrot, radish, turnip (found underground). Stem — potato and ginger are modified stems. Leaf — spinach, fenugreek leaves, and cabbage (cabbage is made up of leaves). Flower — cauliflower, broccoli. Fruit — mango, apple, tomato, pumpkin. Seed — chickpea, wheat, fenugreek seeds. This is why every part of a plant reaches our plate in one form or another.
Eating habits — three types
Animals are divided into three groups based on their eating habits: (1) Herbivores — eat only plants or plant parts: cow, buffalo, goat, deer, elephant. Their teeth are flat and suited for grinding. (2) Carnivores — eat other animals: lion, wolf, fox, cheetah. Their teeth are sharp and suited for tearing flesh. (3) Omnivores — eat both plants and animals: humans, crow, bear, dog. This is why humans have mixed teeth — sharp cutting teeth at the front (for plant food) and flat grinding teeth at the back (for meat).
Food habits across different regions
Within the same country, different regions have different foods: In Punjab and Haryana, wheat is grown, so roti is the staple food. In Bengal and Bihar, rice is grown, so cooked rice is the staple. In South India, rice is used to make idli and dosa. This is because the food that is prepared in a region depends on the crops grown there — where there is more water, rice is grown; where there is less water, wheat is grown. About honey: bees collect nectar from flowers, carry it in their mouths, convert it into honey, and store it in their hive. A single honeybee needs to visit thousands of flowers to produce honey.
Key Concepts
Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.
- 01Food has two sources: plants (rice, wheat, mango, carrot) and animals (milk, eggs, honey, meat). Some foods require ingredients to prepare — for example, roti needs flour, water, and salt.
- 02Different parts of plants give us food: root — carrot, radish; stem — potato, ginger; leaf — spinach; flower — cauliflower; fruit — mango; seed — chickpea.
- 03Animals are grouped by their eating habits: herbivores (only plants — cow, deer), carnivores (other animals — lion), omnivores (both — humans, crow).
- 04Honey is made by bees from the nectar of flowers. Milk comes from cows, buffaloes, and goats; eggs come from hens and ducks.
- 05The same food item is prepared differently in different places — roti in Punjab, idli-dosa in Tamil Nadu, rice in Bengal — depending on the crops grown and the local food habits of that region.
Questions & Solutions
Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.
What is the difference between herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores? Write two examples of each.
Which parts of plants do we eat as food? Give two examples of each.
What are the ingredients needed to make roti, and where do they come from?
How is honey made?
How are human teeth different from the teeth of a lion and a cow?
Food comes from plants and animals. The roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds of plants all serve as food in different forms. Animals are classified as herbivores (eat plants), carnivores (eat meat), or omnivores (eat both). Preparing food requires several ingredients.
