The Living Organisms and Their Surroundings
Overview
The desert cactus and the trees along a riverbank — both have to survive in very different conditions. Whatever lives in its home (habitat) has some special features (adaptations) in its body. Let us find out more.

Habitat — the home of a living organism
A habitat is the place where an organism lives and from where it gets everything it needs — food, water, shelter, and a mate. There are two main types: (1) Terrestrial — on land: forest (monkey, lion), desert (camel, snake), mountains (goat, snow leopard), grasslands, home surroundings. (2) Aquatic — in water: pond (fish, lotus, frog), river, ocean (fish, whale, seaweed). Every habitat has its own conditions — water, heat, light, soil — and because of this, the life found there is different from place to place.
Biotic + Abiotic = Habitat
Components of a habitat: (1) Biotic — living things: plants, animals, insects, fungi, bacteria. (2) Abiotic — non-living things: water, soil, air, sunlight, temperature, rocks. Both are connected to each other: plants take water from the soil, animals eat plants, bacteria break down dead matter and return it to the soil. Without one, the other is incomplete — that is why it is important to protect all members of a habitat.
Adaptation — designed for the home
Every organism has special features in its body that allow it to live in its habitat — these are called adaptations. In the desert: cactus — leaves are modified into spines (less water is lost as vapour), the stem is filled with a juicy tissue (stores water), roots are deep and spread wide; camel — fat stored in the hump (source of energy), long legs (keep the body away from the hot ground), long eyelashes (protect eyes from sand). In water: fish — streamlined body (water flows past easily), gills (take oxygen from water), fins (for movement); lotus — leaves float on water, stem has air spaces inside. Humans too: cotton clothes in summer, woollen clothes in winter — our adaptation lies in our clothing.
Life processes — the signs of life
Every living organism — from a plant to a human being — does the following: (1) Nutrition — making or taking in food; (2) Respiration — breathing (oxygen → energy); (3) Growth — increasing in size; (4) Excretion — removing waste from the body; (5) Reproduction — producing offspring of the same kind (seeds, eggs, young ones); (6) Responding to stimuli — leaves turning towards sunlight, pulling our hand away when we touch something hot. Whatever does all of these is alive. This is the formula for life.
Key Concepts
Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.
- 01Habitat: The place where a living organism lives — its home. Two types: terrestrial (on land) and aquatic (in water).
- 02Biotic and abiotic: The living parts of a habitat (plants, animals) are biotic; the non-living parts (water, soil, air, light) are abiotic.
- 03Adaptation: The special features in an organism's body that allow it to survive in its home — the spines of a cactus, the hump of a camel, the gills of a fish.
- 04Aquatic adaptation: Fish — streamlined body, gills (to take oxygen from water), fins; lotus — leaves float on water.
- 05Life processes: growth, respiration (breathing), taking in food, removing waste, reproduction, responding to stimuli — these are the signs of life.
Questions & Solutions
Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.
What is a habitat? Write the names of two terrestrial and two aquatic habitats.
How does a cactus survive in the desert?
Why is the camel called the 'ship of the desert'?
What are biotic and abiotic components? Give examples.
What adaptations does a fish have for living in a water habitat?
What are the life processes (signs of life)?
Habitat = home (terrestrial/aquatic). It contains biotic (living organisms) + abiotic (water, air, soil) components. Every organism has special features suited to its home — adaptations (cactus spines, camel's hump, fish gills). Life processes — growth, respiration, nutrition, excretion, reproduction — are the signs of life.
