CHAPTER 01 Typed notes Q&A included

Environment

Overview

Everything around us — mountains, water, air, people, homes — together forms our environment. In this chapter, we will understand the three types of environment, the four domains of Earth, ecosystems, food chains, and the impact of humans on the environment.

Three Types of Environment

(1) Natural environment — formed on its own: land, water, air, plants, animals. (2) Human-made environment — created by humans: homes, buildings, roads, parks, bridges, factories. (3) Human environment — humans themselves: individual, family, community, society. These three are connected to each other: humans (human) built homes (human-made) on land (natural) — taking care of all three is our greatest responsibility.

Four Domains — The Structure of Earth

Lithosphere — the rocky surface of the Earth; humans settle on its landforms (mountains, plains, plateaus). Hydrosphere — all water: oceans, rivers, lakes, ice. Atmosphere — the blanket of air that protects us. Biosphere — where all three come together to support life; it is the smallest but most precious domain. These four domains form the structure of the natural environment.

Ecosystem and Food Chain

Ecosystem = the interconnected relationship between all living things (biotic) and non-living things (abiotic) in a habitat. For example, a pond: water, soil, and sunlight (abiotic) + fish, frogs, crabs, and plants (biotic) — all depend on one another. The food chain shows this: grass (producer) → grasshopper (herbivore) → frog → snake → eagle. Each level depends on the level below it. If one level breaks down — the entire chain is disrupted. That is why the entire ecosystem must be protected.

Human Impact — Disturbing and Conserving the Environment

Humans have changed the environment for their comfort and convenience: forests were cut down (deforestation), rivers and lakes became polluted, animals were hunted, and petrol and diesel made the air dirty. Effects: global warming, floods and droughts, animals under threat. Conservation: plant trees, save water and paper, segregate waste, reduce plastic use, protect animals. The environment is our home — there is no logic in polluting our own home.

Key Concepts

Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.

  • 01Environment = everything that surrounds us: natural (land, water, air, living things) + human-made (homes, roads, parks) + human (individual, family, community).
  • 02The 4 domains of the natural environment: lithosphere (solid surface of the Earth), hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), biosphere (the part where life exists).
  • 03The lithosphere gives us landforms: mountains, plateaus, plains — all serving as habitats for human settlement and farming.
  • 04Ecosystem = the relationship between all living things (biotic) and non-living things (abiotic) in a particular place — for example, a pond: fish, plants, water, and soil all together form one ecosystem.
  • 05Food chain: food (energy) passes from one level to the next — grass → deer → lion. Humans have disturbed the environment for their needs — through pollution and deforestation — so conservation is essential.

Questions & Solutions

Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.

1

What are the three types of environment? Give examples.

2

What is an ecosystem? Give one example.

3

What is a food chain? Write one example.

4

What is the biosphere and why is it precious?

5

How have humans disturbed the environment? Give two examples.

Summary

Environment = natural + human-made + human. The natural environment has 4 domains: lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere. In an ecosystem, biotic and abiotic components are interconnected; the food chain transfers energy from one level to the next. Humans have disturbed the environment — conservation is now the only way forward.
