Life in the Deserts
Overview
Deserts — the driest parts of the Earth. But deserts are of two types: Hot (Sahara — hot sand) and Cold (Ladakh — cold desert). People in both types live according to their conditions. Let's explore.
Typed Notes
Hot Desert — Sahara
The world's largest hot desert — the Sahara (~8.5 million km² — larger than India!) — is located in North Africa. Climate: extremely hot during the day (up to 50°C on the sand), quickly turns cold at night (sand cannot hold heat), and rainfall is very low (less than 25cm). The land consists of sand dunes and rocky plains. Parts of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and Morocco also fall within the Sahara.
People of Sahara — Oasis and Oil
The people of the Sahara include Bedouins and Tuaregs — nomads (wandering people): they travel by camel (the ship of the desert), rear sheep, goats, and camels (for wool, meat, and milk), and live in tents. Where underground water rises to the surface — an oasis (with date palms, coconut trees, and vegetable fields) — that becomes a place to settle. In earlier times, they used to trade through caravans (groups of camels). Now, oil and petroleum are extracted in Algeria and Libya — this brought money and cities were built (pipelines, roads). The Sahara still remains the most sparsely populated large region in the world.
Cold Desert — Ladakh
Ladakh — India's cold desert: located between the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges (in the valley of the Indus river). Rainfall is very low — because the Himalayas block the clouds (rain shadow effect). Climate: days are warm in summer (strong sunlight — no sand, just rocks), nights are cold; in winter, temperatures drop below -30°C. The land is rocky and bare — it is also called 'moonland'. Water comes from melting glaciers (rivers and streams). Trees are found only near the edges — poplar, willow, and apricot.
People of Ladakh — From Pashmina to Gompas
The population of Ladakh is small — people live according to their environment: (1) Pashmina goat — its soft hair is used to make the world-famous Kashmiri Pashmina shawl (fine wool from the undercoat in winter); (2) Yak — a large, heavy animal used for milk, meat, and transport; (3) Chiru (Tibetan antelope) — hunted for Shahtoosh wool (now banned — protected animal); (4) Farming: barley, apricot, and vegetables (water brought from glaciers through channels). The people follow Buddhism — they pray at gompas (monasteries); Leh is the main town (tourism is also important). Roads open only through passes like Zoji La — so the region gets cut off in winter.
Key Concepts
Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.
- 01Desert = an area with very low rainfall (less than 25cm). Two types: Hot deserts (warm — Sahara, Thar) and Cold deserts (cold — Ladakh, Gobi, even Antarctica!).
- 02Sahara: the world's largest hot desert (North Africa, ~8.5 million km² — larger than India!); climate: very hot during the day (up to 50°C), cold at night; very little rainfall.
- 03People of Sahara: Bedouins and Tuaregs — nomads (wandering people) — travel by camel, rear sheep and goats; oasis — farming at water spots (dates, vegetables); now earning money from oil and petroleum (Algeria, Libya).
- 04Ladakh (Cold desert): located between the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges (J&K/Ladakh UT); very little rainfall (mountains block the clouds); days are warm in summer but nights are cold, winters are extremely cold (-30°C and below); water comes from glaciers.
- 05People of Ladakh: Pashmina goat (fine wool — Kashmiri shawl), yak (milk, meat, and transport), Chiru (Tibetan antelope); Leh — the main town; Buddhist culture, gompas (monasteries).
Questions & Solutions
Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.
Where is the Sahara and how large is it?
What is an oasis?
Who are the Bedouins and Tuaregs?
Why is Ladakh a cold desert, even though there is no sand there?
What is Pashmina and where does it come from?
What do the people of Ladakh do to earn their living?
Deserts: Hot — Sahara (world's largest, Bedouins and Tuaregs as nomads, farming at oases, now oil) and Cold — Ladakh (between Himalayas and Karakoram, rain shadow effect, glacier water, Pashmina goat, yak, Chiru, Buddhist gompas, Leh). Low rainfall = low population, but people always find a way to live.
