CHAPTER 07 Typed notes Q&A included

Human Environment–Settlement, Transport and Communication

Overview

Humans live with the environment and build homes, travel, and communicate — this is called the human environment. This chapter covers three topics: Settlements (places where people live), Transport (means of travel), and Communication (means of exchanging information).

Human Environment–Settlement, Transport and Communication

Typed Notes

Settlement — A Place to Live

A place where people build homes and live is called a settlement. Temporary — for a short period of time: a farmer's hut near the field, a circus tent. Permanent — for always: village, town, city. Village = rural: farming, animal rearing, fishing. City = urban: shops, offices, factories. Settlements do not form on just any empty land — people choose a place by looking at water availability, farmland, roads, and safety.

Compact and Scattered Settlements

Rural settlements are of two types: Compact — houses built close together: near a river, near a water well — everything is easy to reach on foot. Scattered — houses spread out: in between fields — where land is less fertile (mountain slopes, deserts) — the farmer builds a home right next to his own field. In cities — settlements are always compact, but much larger: population density is very high.

Transport — Three Routes

(1) Land: road (reaches everywhere — cycle, bus, truck) and rail (for heavy goods and passengers — cheap, long distance). In mountains, roads wind around (hairpin bends) or go through tunnels. (2) Water: rivers and oceans — the oldest and cheapest mode for carrying heavy goods (ships, boats). (3) Air: fastest, most expensive — long distances, emergencies, costly goods. The type of transport used in any area depends on its land: mountains — mules and ponies (now roads too), deserts — camels, coastal areas — boats.

Communication — Sending Information

Two types: (1) Personal — from one person to another: letter, telephone, mobile, email. (2) Mass communication — from one source to many people: newspaper, radio, TV, internet, cinema. Radio reaches far-off areas like mountains and deserts; the internet has made the world a small village. During emergencies (flood, cyclone), mass communication saves lives — warnings reach everyone.

Key Concepts

Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.

  • 01Settlement = a place where people live and build homes. Two types: Temporary (near a workplace — camp, farmer's field hut) and Permanent (for always — village, city).
  • 02Rural settlement — village: based on farming and animal rearing; Compact (houses close together — near a water source) or Scattered (spread out — among farmlands). Urban — city: for work purposes — shops, factories, offices.
  • 03Transport = movement of people and goods: Land (road, rail), Water (rivers and oceans — cheapest for heavy goods), Air (fastest, most expensive).
  • 04Communication = sending news and information: Personal (letter, phone) and Mass (one to many — newspaper, TV, radio, internet).
  • 05Settlements form based on location: near water (rivers — the oldest and largest settlements), crossroads, along roads; scattered in mountains; near oases in deserts.

Questions & Solutions

Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.

1

What is a settlement? Name its two types.

2

What is the difference between compact and scattered settlements? Where is each found?

3

What are the three modes of transport? Give one key feature of each.

4

What is mass communication? Give two examples.

5

Why are settlements scattered in mountain areas?

6

Why have large settlements always developed along rivers?

Summary

Settlement: temporary/permanent; rural (compact/scattered)/urban. Transport: land (road-rail), water (cheap for heavy goods), air (fast but expensive). Communication: personal (phone-letter) and mass (TV-radio-newspaper). Settlements form based on location — considering water, roads, and land.
