CHAPTER 08 Typed notes Q&A included

Human–Environment Interactions: The Tropical and the Subtropical Region

Overview

The Amazon basin (world's largest jungle) and the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin (basin with the largest population) — two completely different worlds. In one place, the jungle kept humans at bay; in the other, humans turned the jungle into farmland. Let us explore both of them.

Human–Environment Interactions: The Tropical and the Subtropical Region

Typed Notes

Amazon — World's Largest Jungle

In South America, near the Equator — lies the Amazon basin. Climate: equatorial — hot throughout the year (25–30°C) and rain every day. Here lies the world's largest rainforest — a thick green home where: tall trees of mahogany, ebony, and rosewood grow; and below them grow orchids and bromeliads. That is why it is also called the 'lungs of the earth' — a large part of the world's oxygen is produced here.

Animals and People of the Amazon

Animals: jaguar (large cat), sloth (a slow-moving animal that hangs upside down from trees), anaconda (world's largest snake), piranha (fish with sharp teeth), toucan, macaw (parrot). People: very few — the land here is wet and green, making farming difficult; some tribes (forest people) hunt, fish, and practice swidden farming (slash and burn); cities like Manaus exist along the riverbanks. Here, the jungle is greater than the human presence.

Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin — Most Densely Populated

A subtropical region — covering parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. The Ganga originates from the Himalayas, and the Brahmaputra (known as Tsangpo in Tibet) — both together form the world's largest delta (Sundarbans). Climate: monsoon — hot and wet (100–200 cm of rainfall). Farming: paddy (rice — the most important crop), jute, tea (Darjeeling), pulses. That is why this region has the world's most dense population — civilization has flourished here for thousands of years through farming, fishing, and river transport.

Two Basins — Two Stories

Amazon: the jungle sustained the people — humans live according to the jungle's terms. Ganga basin: humans converted the jungle into farmland — population grew and cities were built (Kanpur, Patna, Kolkata). The lesson from both: the relationship between the environment and humans must remain balanced — one has too much jungle, the other has too many people — both face their own problems (deforestation vs. population pressure).

Key Concepts

Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.

  • 01Basin = the land that collects the water of a river (drainage basin). Amazon basin — basin of the Amazon river; Ganga-Brahmaputra basin — basin of both rivers.
  • 02Amazon basin: Near the Equator (South America) — equatorial climate (hot and wet throughout the year), world's largest rainforest — mahogany, orchids; animals — jaguar, sloth, anaconda, piranha; fewer people (tribes — farming and hunting).
  • 03Ganga-Brahmaputra basin: Subtropical (India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh) — monsoon climate; farming (paddy, jute, tea) — world's most densely populated basin; animals — Bengal tiger, elephant, alligator (Gharial).
  • 04The Amazon jungle is not heavily populated — the land is very wet and green; that is why fewer people live there and in small groups.
  • 05The connection with the Ganga basin: the river provided soil (flood plains), water, and transport — that is why one of the greatest civilizations has thrived here for thousands of years.

Questions & Solutions

Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.

1

What is a basin?

2

What is the climate of the Amazon basin like?

3

Name two special animals of the Amazon.

4

What crops are grown in the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin?

5

Why is the Ganga basin so densely populated?

6

What is the Brahmaputra called in Tibet?

Summary

Amazon basin: equatorial, world's largest rainforest (jaguar, sloth, anaconda), fewer people. Ganga-Brahmaputra basin: monsoon, paddy and jute, world's most densely populated, Bengal tiger. Both basins — two different models of the environment-human relationship.
