Resources
Overview
Everything around us that is useful to us is a resource — books, water, electricity, and even humans themselves. In this chapter, we will learn about the types of resources, their conservation, and sustainable development.

What is a Resource — Everything That is Useful
A resource is anything that is useful to us and fulfills our needs. There are three categories: (1) Natural — obtained from nature: land, water, air, forests, animals, minerals, sunlight. (2) Human-made — created by humans from natural resources: houses, roads, machines, books, electricity. (3) Human — humans themselves: their skills, knowledge, and hard work. Whether something becomes a resource or not depends on our need and available technology: petroleum was once considered waste, but today it is a treasure.
Renewable vs Non-Renewable
(1) Renewable/Inexhaustible — these will never run out: sunlight, wind, the water cycle, biomass. They do not get used up when we use them — they are naturally replenished over time. (2) Non-renewable/Exhaustible — these will run out one day: coal, petroleum, natural gas, minerals (iron, bauxite). They take millions of years to form — and are used up in a single use. That is why it is important to use them wisely — otherwise nothing will be left for future generations.
Actual and Potential Resources
Actual resource — what we are using right now: the water of the Ganga river, the soil of Bihar. Potential resource — what exists but is not yet being used: minerals inside the ocean, the full solar energy potential of the Thar Desert — waiting for the right technology or need. Today's potential resource can become tomorrow's actual resource — all it needs is technology and necessity.
Conservation and Sustainable Development
Conservation means saving and using resources wisely: (1) Use less — use only what is needed; (2) Reuse — recycle paper, plastic, and water; (3) Do not waste — turn off taps, do not throw away food; (4) Increase the use of renewable resources (solar panels) and save non-renewable ones. Sustainable development means fulfilling today's needs while ensuring that future generations can also use resources — for example, forests: for every tree cut, plant one back (reforestation). This is our responsibility towards the generations that come after us.
Key Concepts
Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.
- 01Resource: anything that fulfills our needs and is useful to us — natural (land, water, air, forests), human-made (houses, roads, machines), and human (knowledge, skills, labour).
- 02Natural resources are of two types: Renewable/inexhaustible — those that never run out (solar, wind, water cycle); Non-renewable/exhaustible — those that will eventually run out (coal, petroleum, minerals).
- 03Actual vs Potential: what is being used right now — actual; what can be used in the future — potential (such as minerals not yet extracted).
- 04Conservation: using resources wisely and saving them — spend less, reuse (recycle), do not waste.
- 05Sustainable development: use resources today, but also leave enough for tomorrow — think about the future while using resources.
Questions & Solutions
Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.
What are the three categories of resources? Give examples.
What is the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources? Give two examples of each.
What is the difference between actual and potential resources?
What is sustainable development? Give one example.
Write three methods of conservation.
Resource = anything useful: natural (renewable — solar/wind; non-renewable — coal/petroleum), human-made, human. Actual resources are in use now; potential resources will be used in the future. Conservation: use less + recycle + do not waste. Sustainable development: use today, but also leave enough for tomorrow.
