CHAPTER 07 Typed notes Q&A included

Reproduction in Animals

Overview

How does a new life come into existence? In humans, in fish, in plants? This chapter covers reproduction in humans and animals — from gamete to baby, and also new life without male and female.

Reproduction in Animals

Typed Notes

From Gamete to Zygote

In sexual reproduction there are two gametes: (1) Male — sperm: formed in the testes — very small, swim using a tail; (2) Female — ovum (egg): formed in the ovaries — larger, cannot move on its own. Both meet (fertilisation) — zygote (one cell) — grows — embryo (developing stage) — attaches to the wall of the uterus — foetus (body parts formed) — after several months — baby is born. Every living being begins its life as a single zygote.

Internal vs External Fertilisation

(1) Internal — gametes meet inside the body of the male or female: humans, cow, dog, goat, hen — higher chance of survival (fewer eggs needed). (2) External — both gametes are released into water: frog, fish — hundreds of eggs — not all survive (eaten by fish and other animals) — that is why thousands of eggs are laid. Aquatic animals use external fertilisation — land animals (safer environment) use internal fertilisation.

Viviparous, Oviparous and the Hen's Egg

Viviparous — give birth to live young ones: humans, cow, dog — internal fertilisation + baby develops inside the body. Oviparous — lay eggs: hen, fish, snake, frog. Hen is special — it has internal fertilisation (gametes meet inside), but then it lays the egg outside: zygote → embryo begins forming inside — yolk (food), albumen (white part — water and protection), shell (covering) — mother sits on the egg providing warmth (21 days) — chick hatches. The baby develops inside the egg, which is simply kept outside the body. Tadpole to frog — metamorphosis (change of form): larva (immature form) to adult.

Asexual Reproduction and Test Tube Baby

Asexual — without male and female: (1) Binary fission — amoeba: one cell divides into two — two into four; (2) Budding — hydra: a bud forms on the body — breaks off and becomes a new individual. Asexual reproduction does not occur in humans. Test tube baby (IVF): if the mother's oviduct (fallopian tube) is blocked — the doctor removes the ovum from the ovaries, fertilises it with sperm in a laboratory dish — embryo is formed — then placed back into the mother's uterus — baby is born normally — the name 'test tube' comes from the dish used, but the baby is a real baby just like any other.

Key Concepts

Revision ke liye ek nazar — exam se pehle yahi padhna hai.

  • 01Sexual reproduction: male gamete (sperm — testes) + female gamete (ovum — ovaries) → zygote → embryo → foetus → baby.
  • 02Internal fertilisation: inside the body (humans, cow, dog, hen); External — in water (frog, fish — hundreds of eggs, not all survive).
  • 03Viviparous — give birth to young ones (humans, cow); Oviparous — lay eggs (hen, fish). Hen — lays egg after internal fertilisation!
  • 04Hen's egg: yolk (food), albumen (white part), shell (covering) — does the mother sit? yes — body heat or by sitting — 21 days — chick hatches (no metamorphosis).
  • 05Metamorphosis: change of form — tadpole → frog; silkworm: larva → pupa → moth. Asexual: binary fission (amoeba), budding (hydra). Test tube baby (IVF).

Questions & Solutions

Pehle khud try karo — phir solution kholo. Yahi tariqa topper banata hai.

1

What are a zygote, embryo, and foetus?

2

What is the difference between internal and external fertilisation? Give examples.

3

The hen has internal fertilisation, so why does it lay an egg?

4

Write the 3 parts of a hen's egg and their functions.

5

What is metamorphosis? Give two examples.

6

What is a test tube baby?

Summary

Sexual: sperm (testes) + ovum (ovaries) → zygote → embryo → foetus → baby. Internal (humans, hen) vs external (frog, fish — thousands of eggs). Viviparous (live birth) vs oviparous (eggs — hen: yolk-albumen-shell, 21 days). Metamorphosis (tadpole→frog). Asexual: fission (amoeba), budding (hydra). IVF — test tube baby.
